Hospital Value-Based Purchasing

November 17, 2011
Presented by the Mississippi Hospital Association

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has stated that its objective has been to change Medicare from a passive player to an active purchaser of quality health care for its beneficiaries. They helped achieve this objective through the amending of Section 1886 of the Social Security Act by Section 3001 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act to create the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Program. The VBP Program is a budget-neutral program to compensate hospitals for performance against certain quality measures. This program is scheduled to start in the 2013 fiscal year, applicable to payments for discharges occurring on or after October 1, 2012.

The CMS believes value-purchasing is a critical move in improving how care and services are paid for, succeeding toward rewarding better value, outcomes, and innovations instead of merely volume. HORNE's Health Care Valuation Services Director Greg Anderson will be directing this educational webinar.

This webinar will:

  • Summarize the quality metrics associated with the Hospital-Value Based Purchasing program
  • Clarify the intricate calculations related with the financial incentive provisions
  • Assist participants in preparing for the approaching implementation
